New promotion to play a part in heavyweight star’s next fight.
Tyson Fury’s comeback fight being against Arslanbek Makhmudov didn’t come as much of a surprise; rumours had been circulating that Makhmudov was being considered, and both Frank Warren and Spencer Brown had confirmed that he was a possible opponent.
What came as a bit more of a surprise was that the fight was announced to be taking place on Netflix, which initially led some to think that Fury had left Queensberry Promotions. However, it has been confirmed that Warren is very much still Fury’s promoter, though Frank Warren himself has stated that he had no involvement in putting Fury’s fight with Makhmudov together.
Makhmudov (21-2, 19 KOs) is coming off a decision victory over Fury’s countryman Dave Allen, a bout which boosted the Russian’s profile in the United Kingdom.
Despite having one of the meanest-looking visages of any current fighter in boxing and possessing the power to flatten practically anyone he lands cleanly on, Makhmudov’s frailties have already been laid bare.
He was dismantled by German body-wrecking specialist Agit Kabayel in 2023, then was stopped in 2024 by Guido Vianello.
Makhmudov is dangerous and a very, very scary man to behold, but he has his weaknesses. And for this reason, he is just the right amount of everything for Fury’s first fight back.
But while Frank Warren’s involvement in the bout is currently up in the air, one thing that has been confirmed in that Zuffa Boxing will be playing a part in it.
Dana White’s new promotion has been making moves recently, and this is their latest in a series of big ones. In addition to being involved in Fury’s next fight, they have also expressed their intention to finally stage Fury’s showdown with Anthony Joshua, a fight which has always managed to elude fans and promoters alike.
Whether they follow through on this claim remains to be seen, but it’s clear that both Zuffa Boxing and Netflix are starting to make their mark on the sport.
