World champion ruled out as next foe of Jaron Ennis

Ennis to not face fellow 154-pound champion next.

On Saturday, Jaron Ennis fought Xander Zayas, a bout that was contested for the unified super-welterweight championship of the world.

Zayas was the youngest champion with more than one belt in the sport, while Ennis was a former unified champion at welterweight who was looking to become a two-division conqueror.

Whoever won, not many thought it would be a one-sided affair. If it was, then whoever dished out the beating would be up for pound-for-pound consideration.

That’s why Jaron Ennis now is.

Indeed, the man known as “Boots” walked all over Zayas–for the most part, at least– dropping him three times and stopping him to become a two-belt titleholder for the second time.

Quite like with David Benavidez against Gilberto Ramirez in early May, it was a performance so dominant and conclusive that the American is now being considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

Indeed, Ennis officially managed to break his way into The Ring‘s top ten, and the question on everyone’s minds has to do with who he could potentially face next.

Another unification against Josh Kelly? The seemingly doomed Vergil Ortiz Jr. fight?

Maybe.

One person it definitely won’t be, though, is Sebastian Fundora, the WBC champion at super-welterweight. This is because Sampson Lewkowicz (Fundora’s promoter) has stated his fighter will next be facing Ermal Hadribeaj, the WBC #1 contender.

However, Lewkowicz did state that a fight between Fundora and Ennis could take place, but it would have to be next year at the earliest.

As a result, Ennis’s next opponent will remain a matter of speculation for now.
