Tommy Fury offered title shot.
Tommy Fury has had one of the most unique careers of any boxer. The younger brother of former two-time heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury, Tommy has made his name at a very different level of the sport to his ultra-popular sibling.
First gaining attention for his appearance on Love Island, Tommy received a significant boost to his boxing profile after social media personality Jake Paul called him out a few years ago shortly after the then-recent start of the American’s pugilistic career.
The two were originally scheduled to fight in December of 2021, but Tommy would end up pulling out due to an injury and an infection. They were then rescheduled to meet in August of 2022, but Tommy would pull out again due to being denied entry into the United States.
When they finally squared off in February of 2023, Tommy would win a split decision to hand Paul his very first defeat.
Since then, the younger Fury has appeared in more novelty bouts. The first of these was against another internet star in KSI, while the second was an exhibition against former professional strongman Eddie Hall just last week.
Following his victory in that most recent affair, Tyson Fury has stated that he believes Tommy should get a shot at the WBC cruiserweight title, currently held by Armenia’s Noel Mikaelian.
Mikaelian has now responded to Tyson’s statement, saying he will fight Tommy under one condition.
“If your brother wants a title shot, I’m up for it,” Mikaelian said, “but only if you vouch to fight me next.”
The lightest weight “The Gypsy King” has ever come in at is 245½ pounds, which was for his 2012 fight with Vinny Maddalone.
That happens to still be far above the cruiserweight limit. Given that, it is unlikely the former heavyweight champion could ever fight in a professionally sanctioned cruiserweight bout, especially considering he most recently weighed in at 268 pounds for his fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov.
So, at the end of the day, Tommy Fury’s title shot may still be well out of reach.
