WBO order controversial rematch for unified world titles

The 130lbs division was recently unified in front of a sold out crowd in Pheonix.

Matchroom Boxing staged Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez vs Emanuel Navarrete for the IBF and WBO junior lightweight world championships.

Emanuel Navaratte (40-2-1, 33ko’s), who is signed to Top Rank, dominated and stop Nunez in round 11.

Now a three weight world champion, Navarrete has been ordered to face an opponent he’s all too familiar with.

The WBO World Championship Committee has unanimously voted to order negotiations between Unified WBO/IBF Jr. Lightweight Champion, Emanuel Navarrete and the number one world-rated contender & mandatory challenger, Charly Suarez to discharge pending mandatory obligation.

WBO President Gustavo Olivieri wrote on his X account. “The parties are granted twenty (20) days to reach terms. Failing an agreement, purse bid proceedings will be ordered in accordance with WBO regulations. The minimum bid for the Jr. Lightweight (130 lbs.) division is set at $150,000.”

Charly Suarez (18-0, 10ko’s) is an experienced veteran from the Philippines.

Less than a year ago the pair faced off in the ring, with the outcome being extremely controversial.

After 8 competitive rounds, the fight was stopped by the referee for a cut on Navarrete via accidental headbutt.

Initially, the fight went to the scorecards with Navarrete winning a technical decision.

However, in the aftermath the outcome was reversed to a no-contest, with Suarez remaining unbeaten.

The pair are set to close this chapter for good in the near future and will likely to be the last chance at world championship honours for Charly Suarez.
