WBC reveal new ranking for Tyson Fury

The WBC reveal Tyson Fury’s newest place in their rankings.

Prior to his lengthy hiatus from the sport, Tyson Fury held a lofty position in the WBC rankings. But after spending over a year out of the ring, he was dropped from the ratings due to inactivity.

“The Gypsy King” would return just under a month ago to take on Arslanbek Makhmudov, outboxing the powerful Russian to win by a wide unanimous decision.

It was assumed by quite a few people that Fury’s victory would regain him a healthy place amongst the ranking organisations, especially with the WBC.

This was proven true when after Fury’s victory, once again making him one of the very best heavyweights in the world.

The WBC’s #1 contender was Lawrence Okolie, another British heavyweight who requested the ranking upon his move up to the division following title reigns at cruiserweight and bridgerweight.

Okolie was scheduled to make his fourth heavyweight appearance in Paris, facing hometown fighter Tony Yoka. However, the bout (scheduled for late April) was pulled after Okolie tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

This positive test result caused the entire show to get scrapped, and Okolie is now facing a potential four-year ban if he can’t prove how the substance got into his system.

Likely because of this situation, the WBC have revealed that they have installed a new #1 contender in their latest rankings, a position they have passed over to Tyson Fury.

Fury is expected to have a warm-up fight before a gigantic match against Anthony Joshua later this year, and if he wins both, he could potentially get a shot at regaining his old title.

And should Fury succeed in that endeavour, he would become one of only a few three-time heavyweight world champions in boxing history.
