Michael Magnesi to fight unbeaten British contender.
Michael Magnesi (26-2, 13 KOs) has been around since 2015, but each big shot has slipped through his fingers. Or more accurately, each big shot has found him wanting.
It was in 2020 that Magnesi beat Patrick Kinigamazi to become the IBO super-featherweight champion. He would make two defences of the title before losing it, as well as his undefeated record, to Anthony Cacace.
Cacace, of course, has since gone on to hold both the IBF and WBA world championships. Back then, though, there wasn’t as good an idea as to how good Cacace was.
Following the Cacace loss, Magnesi would bounce back with a win over the 17-0 Ayrton Osmar Gimenez and the 18-0 Nike Theran. It was then, though, that he was stopped by the heavy-handed Masanori Rikiishi, who would go on to challenge Eduardo Núnez for the vacant IBF title.
In the time since, Magnesi has had three straight wins, one of which was over Khalil El Hadri for the WBC silver title.
So, when speaking about Magnesi, it is correct to say that he has only lost to world-level opponents. Now, though, the WBC have ordered him to face an undefeated British contender who many believe could be world level.
This contender is Ryan Garner (18-0, 9 KOs), the in-form Southampton slickster who has been tipped for some very big things.
Garner is the former British, Commonwealth, and European champion. Last time out, he stopped Christian Bielma on the Jazza Dickens vs. Anthony Cacace undercard.
Garner owns wins over domestic opposition such as Reece Bellotti and Archie Sharp. His fight with Magnesi will be taking place on the 20th of June in the United Kingdom, and it will be contested for the WBC interim super-featherweight championship.
