Rick Mirigian teases long-awaited clash for his fighter’s next bout.
If you ask fans what the best weight class in boxing currently is, the chances are that you will hear the majority of them answer with the super-welterweight division, the 154-pound class that exists smack-bang in the middle of welterweight and middleweight.
Interestingly enough, the two divisions it exists between are both considered to be lacking in depth, but the reason fans rate the super-welterweights so highly is no secret.
The fighters who reside in this division are plentiful in talent, with both the contenders and champions being dangerous and skilled. It includes the likes of Josh Kelly, Bakhram Murtazaliev, Xander Zayas, Sebastian Fundora, Israil Madrimov, Serhii Bohachuk, Brandon Adams, and plenty more.
But there are two particular fighters who fans have been wanting to fight each other for a while now, and it looks like we might be getting it.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. is 24-0 with 22 KOs. He won his first 21 fights by knockout, but went the distance twice consecutively against Madrimov and Bohachuk. Most recently, though, he recorded a second-round win over Erickson Lubin to get back to knockout ways.
Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis (35-0 (1), 31 KOs) won the IBF interim title at welterweight, which was upgraded to the full thing when Terence Crawford left the division. Ennis made two defences of this title before winning the WBA and The Ring titles by beating Eimantas Stanionis. Ennis then moved up and stopped Uisma Lima in the opening round.
Both Ennis and Ortiz faced off in the ring following Ortiz’s win over Lubin, but actually making the fight has proven to be rather difficult. Arguments over purse bids has been the main stumbling block.
However, Rick Mirigian (manager of Ortiz) has made a cryptic post to his personal Instagram page, saying, “Never give up…..😎 #Boxing” and, “This one saves the sport. Ortiz in 7 😤”, accompanied by the image of Ennis and Ortiz staring each other down in the ring.
This seems to suggest that some sort of deal has taken place for the fight, and if that’s the case, fans will be treated to a battle between two undefeated American knockout artists who hold interim titles with the WBC and WBA, respectively.
