Ortiz Jr. and Golden Boy come to an agreement.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. is one of the best American boxers in the world to have not yet reigned as a major world champion. An exciting, heavy-handed fighter, the Texan stands as one of the very top names in the stacked super-welterweight division.
On his résumé, he boasts official victories over Israil Madrimov, Serhii Bohachuk, Erickson Lubin, and others. The current WBC interim titleholder, he is presently in a fairly envious position in the 154-pound class.
But of all the opponents he could potentially face at the weight, there is one that fans and promoters want the most, one that would really excite the boxing world like none else would.
That is a fight with Jaron Ennis, Ortiz’s fellow unbeaten American puncher who recently rose to be unified champion of the division with a beatdown of Xander Zayas.
It is a matchup that was being spoken about way before they both occupied the same division, and the possibility of it occurring only grew larger after Ortiz’s win over Lubin.
However, boxing did what boxing does, resulting in talks breaking down and Ortiz filing a lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions, seeking to make the Ennis fight without their involvement.
After Golden Boy obtained a temporary restraining order against Ortiz in February, he was prevented from making any fight–including the one against Ennis–without them.
But today, it was announced that the two sides have reached a deal together, making the fight with Ennis a possibility once again.
“I’m very grateful that Golden Boy and I were able to come to an understanding and resolve everything”, Ortiz was quoted as saying. “I’m excited to move forward and make the biggest fights happen, including the Ennis fight. My only focus is on delivering unforgettable fights to the fans, and I know my team and I will accomplish that together.”
