Unbeaten American star seeking confirmation of order’s expiration.
In a time where we’ve essentially gotten used to the biggest fights in boxing being made (thanks to Riyadh Season’s presence in the last couple of years), it feels like a big step back for a long-awaited fight to elude the fans like every important contest used to.
This, however, is the case with Jaron Ennis vs. Vergil Ortiz Jr. Despite everything seemingly falling into place in terms of the logic of the fight, there have been several hurdles to overcome regarding the fight-making process.
The reasoning for this could be delved into, but ultimately, it doesn’t matter. The point is that fans of boxing are being deprived of one of the best fights the sport has to offer, and all that can be done on our side is to watch how things play out.
What makes Ennis vs. Ortiz such a good fight is obvious when you look at the barebones facts involved. They are both super-welterweights in their absolute primes. Ennis (35-0 (1), 31 KOs) is the WBA interim champion, while Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs) is the WBC interim champion.
However, on the 13th of February, Golden Boy Promotions filed temporary restraining order against Ortiz that prevented him from using a third party to make the Ennis fight.
Now, though, Ortiz has filed an emergency motion for confirmation that the temporary restraining order has expired, as the court set the 27th of February as the expiry date.
Whether this makes the Ennis fight easier to be made can’t be known currently, but it’s been said that Ennis will begin looking at other fights should more delays to negotiations take place.
