Update on tragedy on Lester Martinez undercard

Update on ProBox tragedy revealed.

Lester Martínez became the first person in the history of Guatemala to win an alphabet strap when he defeated Immanuwel Aleem in a ProBox TV headliner on Saturday.

This may have been an interim title as opposed to a full championship, but it is still a remarkable achievement for the undefeated super-middleweight.

While Martínez appeared on ProBox before (in his knockout victory over the unbeaten Joeshon James), it his September slugfest with Christian Mbilli that largely introduced him to the boxing public.

That fight occurred on the Canelo Álvarez vs. Terence Crawford show, and it was for the WBC interim title at 168 pounds (the very same belt Martínez won on Saturday).

For many, Mbilli vs. Martínez was the highlight of the night. And with Mbilli now being the full WBC world champion, a rematch between the two is both anticipated and very likely.

However, it was on the same night as Martínez’s greatest triumph that a very umfortunate event took place.

On the undercard, Jocelyn Camarillo took on 19-year-old Isis Sio, winning after knocking Sio unconscious with a violent combination that left her facedown on the canvas.

Sio was hastily transported to the Loma Linda University Medical Centre, where she was placed in a medically induced coma in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

While the situation is is still unfolding, it is now being reported that the North Dakota fighter has awoken from her coma and is now speaking. In addition, she is now breathing on her own, having been taken off her ventilator.

We hope that Isis Sio continues to improve and will eventually fully recover.
