Tyson Fury states he is open to fighting heavyweight champion

Fury is open to facing reigning heavyweight champion.

Currently, Tyson Fury is in the United States, training for his long-awaited bout with Anthony Joshua (or potentially someone else, should the Joshua fight not materialise).

A big presence in the sport of boxing, the former two-time heavyweight ruler remains one of the profession’s most popular stars, and “The Gypsy King” often has a lot to say on the happenings in the pugilistic world.

Currently, his focus will be on the Joshua showdown, which is currently in an uncertain state due to the location still being in dispute. But whether or not it takes place–and whether it is in Britain or America–Fury is very much involved in the events that take place within the heavyweight division.

Over the weekend, we saw the much-hyped Moses Itauma fall to Filip Hrgovic in particularly unfortunate circumstances. After dominating the fight, Itauma ultimately tired out in the 9th round and was stopped before collapsing from exhaustion.

As a result, Hrgovic won the vacant IBF championship and became the first heavyweight world champion from his country of Croatia. It is a result which has certainly shaken up the sport.

Now mandated to make his maiden defence against Frank Sanchez, Hrgovic has nonetheless been included in hypothetical matchups with other heavyweight players, as well. And in an interview following the Itauma-Hrgovic affair, Fury has stated that he would be open to being the new IBF titleholder’s opponent at some point.

Appearing in Miami for BKB 58, Fury spoke on Itauma’s loss to Hrgovic, stating to Bloody Elbow, “It’s boxin’. It happens.”

Upon being asked if he would fight Hrgovic, Fury replied, “If the money’s right, I’ll fight anybody.”

Should Fury face Hrgovic and wrest from him the IBF title, the Englishman would be in good company as one of the few fighters to be a three-time heavyweight world champion.
