Tyson Fury receives new world ranking after Arslanbek Makhmudov win

Fury regains top-ten ranking after win on Saturday.

Tyson Fury is one of the best heavyweights in the world, and on Saturday, “The Gypsy King” returned after an absence of almost 16 months to defeat Russia’s intimidating Arslanbek Makhmudov.

Throughout the fight, Fury displayed all the deft and elusive skill we’ve come to expect of him, pitching a 120-108 shutout on two cards and winning 119-109 on the third.

The ever-charging Makhmudov was made to look limited and one-dimensional by the elite talent of Fury in a fight that very much resembled a bull being lulled into complete subservience by a matador.

It was as early on as the second round, in fact, that it became clear that whether Makhmudov liked it or not, he was dancing along to Fury’s tune. And for Makhmudov, that tune was as hypnotic and rhythmic as any played by a piper to come out of Hamelin.

It was this dominant, one-sided performance that allowed Fury to notch his most convincing victory since his stoppage of Derek Chisora in their 2022 trilogy, and it was this type of performance that Fury required after such a long time out of action.

It was the assumption of many that triumphing over Makhmudov would allow Fury to regain his ranking amongst the world’s best heavyweights, as he had been dropped from the top ten of the sanctioning bodies due to inactivity.

The Ring have indeed now revealed that Fury has re-entered their heavyweight top ten, taking up the lofty position of #3 behind #2-ranked Agit Kabayel, #1-ranked Fabio Wardley, and champion Oleksandr Usyk.

The opponent most are wanting for Fury next is fellow former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, a fight the boxing public have wanted to see for a number of years now.

Fury very vocally challenged Joshua following his win on Saturday, a callout that Joshua didn’t make clear his intentions on accepting.

Given the recent struggles of “AJ”, it would be ideal for him to take a tune-up before a potential Fury match. And if the two Britons are to meet in the ring, we can expect one of the biggest turnouts in recent boxing history.
