Williamson set for rematch.
Troy Williamson has had a very interesting career so far. A former super-welterweight, “The Trojan” became British champion and engaged in wars with the likes of Ted Cheeseman.
Having never lost before, a wide points defeat to Josh Kelly signalled that Williamson’s time at 154 pounds was likely up. But after a win over a designated opponent at middleweight, he would move back down and lose once again to Caoimhin Agyarko.
Another loss came immediately after (at super-welterweight once again) to Ishmael Davis. And despite moving back up, it would appear that the 160-pound division also wasn’t for Williamson, as he would lose for a third consecutive time to Jahi Tucker.
This prompted a move up to super-middleweight, where he somewhat surprisingly took out Mark Dickinson to win the English title.
This got Williamson a fight with unbeaten British, Commonwealth, and European champion Callum Simpson. And after a back-and-forth affair, Williamson would triumph over his opponent with a quartet of knockdowns in the 10th round.
This was meant to lead into a fight with Germany’s then-unbeaten Simon Zachenhuber on the Tyson Fury vs. Arslanbek Makhmudov undercard. However, Williamson would lose his place on the show when it was reported that Simpson had activated his rematch clause to take on the Darlington man again.
While news on that rematch wasn’t immediate, we now have an update from Ben Shalom (founder of Boxxer and promoter of Simpson), who told BoxingScene, “Simpson-Williamson [2] was contracted a long time ago. It’s looking like July.
“That will definitely be in July. Most likely [with the BBC as the broadcaster]. We’ve had one other offer for that fight, but the BBC[-Boxxer collaboration] will continue.”
Should that be the case, an official announcement should not be too long away.
