British and Commonwealth champion ordered to defend in surprise rematch.
Troy ‘The Trojan’ Williamson (22-4-1, 16 KOs) doesn’t belong in today’s era. He’s an old-school fighter, someone who will fight anyone in spite of the results and give the fans a good show in the process.
Such fighters tend to be the ones the boxing public loves the most.
As a super-welterweight, Williamson beat Harry Scarff and went to war with Ted Cheeseman for the British title, winning by knockout in a fight considered one of 2021’s very best.
Williamson would lose his British title to current world champion Josh Kelly, being comprehensively outboxed over 12 rounds.
Following a win over designated opponent Ramiro Blanco, Williamson would lose again to Caoimhín Agyarko. He would lose again in his next fight to Ishmael Davis, then lost for the third time in a row when he travelled to America to fight Jahi Tucker.
After this run of form, Williamson moved up in weight to fight English super-middleweight champion Mark Dickinson, who would be stripped of his title after failing to make the weight.
Nonetheless, Williamson moved forward with the fight and won the English title by stopping Dickinson after an entertaining battle.
Williamson then took on Callum Simpson, the undefeated British, Commonwealth, and European champion. In a back-and-forth contest, Williamson would pull off the upset after he dropped Simpson four times in the 10th round and stopped him in the very same frame.
Though he vacated the European strap, Williamson still owns the British and Commonwealth titles, though they wouldn’t have been on the line for his fight against the 28-0 Simon Zachenhuber on the Tyson Fury vs. Arslanbek Makhmudov undercard.
However, that fight is now in danger of falling apart.
Today, the British Boxing Board of Control ordered Williamson to defend his domestic titles in a rematch with Callum Simpson.
This creates a very messy situation, given Williamson is currently still set to fight on the undercard of a big event.
Whether Williamson chooses to relinquish his titles or go forward with the fight remains to be seen, but it’s a move that has arrived to the frustration of more than a few.
