Trainer of Andy Ruiz Jr expresses ‘frustration’ over career

The former world champion has been urged to keep his head in the game this time around.

Andy Ruiz Jr delivered a monumental upset to the boxing world back in June 2019 when he knocked out Anthony Joshua.

In doing so, ‘The Destroyer’ claimed the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles.

Six months later, Joshua avenged the loss, outclassing Ruiz in a high-profile rematch.

While Ruiz did go on to fight on three more occasions, the Mexican hasn’t been seen in the ring since his 2024 draw with Jarrell Miller.

Ruiz suffered a fractured hand during the bout, an injury that required a lengthy rehabilitation process.

During his time away from the ring, Ruiz also reunited with his former trainer, Manny Robles, as he looks to rebuild momentum for the next chapter of his career.

In a conversation on the 3 Knockdown Rule podcast, Robles explained: “He put me through a lot of stress, man.

“He just didn’t show up, and when he did, he was inconsistent.”

“That’s one thing you can’t be. You’ve got to show up every day.

“We talked about being a good role model. He wasn’t buying into it.

“Then I said, ‘Hey, if money’s what you want, then go get that money. Go work hard, train hard, to make that money.’

“But I couldn’t convince him, and I lost. I love Andy.

“Listen, we had a talk. I root for him. It’s just frustrating.”

Robles was highly critical of Ruiz’s lack of discipline in the immediate aftermath of his setbacks, which created a noticeable rift between the two.

Now back working together, Robles has made it clear that Andy Ruiz Jr must remain fully focused as he prepares for a return to the ring.
