Shane McGuigan gives update on Adam Azim’s next fight.
Adam Azim has been considered one of the very best prospects in British boxing for the last few years.
Though now more contender than prospect, he is still only in his early 20s and is regarded as a future world champion by many U.K. fans.
After winning the European title in the fewest fights in British boxing history by beating Franck Petitjean, Azim would make one successful defence in a stoppage of Enock Poulsen.
Azim would then take a step-up against British compatriot Ohara Davies, dominating “Two Tanks” on his way to an 8th-round win.
More impressive was Azim’s performance over Sergey Lipinets, the former super-lightweight world champion who the Slough man dispatched in 9 frames to win the IBO title.
Azim was then scheduled to take on Zaur Abdullaev on the Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Conor Benn 2 undercard, but Abdullaev ended up pulling out. So, instead, Azim took on American puncher Kurt Scoby.
Azim would showcase all the skill that has come to be expected of him, subjecting Scoby to a one-sided beatdown before taking him out in the last round.
It was expected that Azim would then be taking on Gustavo Lemos, a former opponent of Richardson Hitchins and Keyshawn Davis who would have made for a terrific step-up.
However, Lemos suffered an injury and had to pull out. And before his replacement opponent was officially announced, Azim also suffered an injury, and the fight collapsed.
Azim has been out of action since then. However, trainer Shane McGuigan has now provided an update as to when his charge may next appear in the ring.
“He’s in the gym. He’s training away”, McGuigan said. “He’s looking forward to his fight. We’ve been trying to get this opponent announced for the last couple of weeks. It’s nothing on our side. There’s been a few opponents we’ve agreed to, and then they’ve fallen out and stuff like that, and that’s on nobody else apart from just the fighters themselves.
“But we want to get this show announced soon and get him out, because he’s a young man that needs to get going. But he’s in a very good place. He’s learning all the time. He’s getting better. He’s going to be a world champion, I believe, before the end of the year. I think he will be. And hopefully, we can get this next fight announced soon, and then he gets out another two times after that before the end of the year.”
It is not clear who this next opponent will be, but given Azim’s recent opposition, it is likely to be a step-up from his previous foe.
