Top Rank win purse bids for Haney vs. Davis.
Devin Haney is someone who is considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. A technical boxer, he perfectly embodies the American slickster, a style that has often proved to be the Marmite of the pugilistic world.
A three-weight world champion who has reigned as undisputed titlist at lightweight, he has faced the likes of Ryan Garcia and Regis Prograis throughout his career.
The Garcia fight will likely prove to be the most infamous of Haney’s career, given the beating he took on the night that involved him being knocked down three times and losing his undefeated record.
Only, it came out afterwards that Garcia had failed a drug test, eventually resulting in the decision being overturned to a no-contest. However, that didn’t erase the punches Haney took on the night.
As a result, many theorised that he wouldn’t be the same fighter afterwards, and this seemed likely when he put in an extremely underwhelming performance against Jose Ramirez.
But he would then surprise many people by outboxing Brian Norman Jr., the then-undefeated, hard-hitting WBO welterweight champion.
Since that victory, Haney has signed a multi-fight deal with DAZN, and his next fight has been rumoured for a while to be a mandatory defence against Keyshawn Davis.
Today, Top Rank won purse bids for the matchup, which is set to be a mandatory defence of Haney’s belt. With a bid of $8.55 million, Top Rank outbid Teofimo Lopez’s Takeover Promotions, who bid $2.35 million.
A former lightweight titlist himself, Davis moved up in weight after losing his belt on the scales. He defeated Jamaine Ortiz and Nahir Albright, then moved up once again, where he was installed as Haney’s mandatory.
Haney vs. Davis is a fascinating clash of styles that could make for a very exciting contest.
