Moses Itauma is boxing’s newest star, and Tony Bellew has labelled the ‘perfect’ opponent for the man from Kent who is set to return in July.
Comparisons to Mike Tyson and hotly tipped to dominate the heavyweight scene, Moses Itauma (14-0, 12ko’s) is making waves at just 21 years old.
This has come as no surprise however.
The southpaw was sparring the likes of Joe Joyce (16-4, 12ko’s) and Lawrence Okolie (23-1, 17ko’s) at just 16 years old.
Okolie labelled the sparring as ‘some of the toughest rounds’ he has had during training camp.
Frank Warren and Queensberry Promotions snapped the starlet up as he turned professional, and just 14 fights in, Itauma is ranked number one in the WBO and WBA.
The man from Chatham became the first person to stop Jermaine Franklin (24-3, 15ko’s) last Saturday.
In the aftermath, Warren revealed that Itauma will return to the ring in July, and this has got the boxing world wondering.
Who will be the next man standing in the way of the Itauma train?
Whilst his speed and combination punching is frightening, there are still questions over the 21 year old, is it too soon to fight one of the divisions big boys?
Itauma called for Filip Hrgovic (19-1, 14ko’s), but the Croatian is out in mid May against British favourite Dave Allen (25-8-2, 20ko’s).
Former WBC cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew (30-3-1, 20ko’s) has shared who he thinks is the perfect opponent for Itauma this July.
Bellew declared to talkSPORT:
“You know what, the perfect match-up for him is Andy Ruiz Jr”.
“It is based on the fact that he is durable and punches hard coming back”.
“I’ve said this for the last 12 months. We’ve seen he can throw a shock punch as he did in the Joshua fight.”
Andy Ruiz (35-2-1, 22ko’s) shocked the world in 2019 when he beat Anthony Joshua (29-4, 27ko’s) to become unified world heavyweight champion in Joshua’s American debut.
Frank Warren has confirmed plans to box Itauma in America this year for the first time, could lightning strike twice?
