Tommy Fury to officially face former World’s Strongest Man winner

Tommy Fury’s shock next fight has been announced.

In boxing, they say that weight classes exist for a reason, and they certainly do. After all, you can’t have a flyweight fighting a cruiserweight, as the size difference would be far too unfair.

But when it comes to the heavyweight division, as long as both combatants weigh above 200 pounds, the weight difference between them can be theoretically limitless.

Because of this, we have seen a number of somewhat jarring spectacles when one fighter vastly outweighs the other, and there are a few extreme examples that number amongst them.

At the world level of the sport, an instance that immediately comes to mind is David Haye’s WBA heavyweight title challenge against Nikolai Valuev.

Haye, the former cruiserweight, weighed in at 217 pounds. The 7-foot Russian, however, weighed in at 316 pounds. And so, it was in the fight billed “David vs Goliath” that Haye overcame a 99-pound disadvantage to beat the reigning champion on away soil.

There are other examples of similar figures, and Valuev regularly outweighed his opponents by comparable margins. Oleksandr Usyk, of course, has often weighed between 30 and 50 pounds lighter than his opponents at heavyweight.

When Daniel Dubois fought Jarrell Miller in 2023, he was outweighed by 94 pounds. When Fabio Wardley took on Dennis Lewandowski in 2019, he was the smaller man by 119½ pounds.

Eric ‘Butterbean’ Esch routinely weighed in over 100 pounds heavier than his opponents, but it was in his last professional fight in 2013 that the popular novelty act weighed in at 426½ pounds against the 251-pound Kirk Lawton, a difference of 175½ pounds.

Regardless, that 100-pound weight difference does not happen often. However, Misfits Boxing have now officially announced that Tommy Fury will be in one such fight.

Fury (11-0, 4 KOs) is set to take on multi-award-winning former professional strongman Eddie Hall, who made his only boxing appearance in a 2022 exhibition against another strongman in Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson.

Though Hall has not boxed professionally, he has engaged in MMA, weighing in for his most recent bout against Mariusz Pudzianowski at 334 pounds.

By comparison, Tommy Fury (a career cruiserweight) made his heavyweight debut in his most recent fight, coming in at 208 pounds.

That’s a difference of 126 pounds, and it may be even more on the night.

Tommy Fury vs. Eddie Hall is being billed as “Beauty vs The Beast”, and it will take place on a Misfits Boxing card on the 13th of June at the AO Arena in Manchester.
