Lopez to fight Romero in title fight.
When it comes to weight classes in boxing, welterweight is seen as one of the weaker ones when it comes to the overall competition. However, there are a few major players that populate the class.
Devin Haney, of course, is one of them. Ryan Garcia is another. There are others, as well, like Conor Benn. And as was revealed earlier today, Teofimo Lopez will soon be adding himself to that roster.
In fact, in his first fight at the weight, Lopez will be fighting Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero for the WBA championship, a bout that will see a meeting of two boxers who have previously been titlists in two separate divisions.
Last time out, Lopez lost his super-lightweight titles to Shakur Stevenson early this year in a fight that–to be perfectly honest–was not close in the slightest. Lopez lost 11 rounds on all three cards, suffering defeat by the exact same score on each.
Romero, on the other hand, most recently notched what is likely the greatest victory on his résumé last year, defeating Ryan Garcia in an upset to win the WBA (Regular) welterweight title.
As a result, both men will be going into this contest facing their second big-name opponent in a row. Also, if Lopez wins, he will become a champion in a third weight division, which is certainly no small feat.
The contest will be taking place on the 22nd of August at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.
