Teofimo Lopez to fight Rolly Romero

Lopez agrees deal to fight Romero.

Teofimo Lopez has been a champion at both lightweight and super-lightweight. In that time, he has faced fighters such as Josh Taylor, Shakur Stevenson, and Vasiliy Lomachenko.

It is Shakur who he fought most recently, having lost to him on the cards over the distance.

Lopez had lost once before, that being an upset defeat to George Kambosos Jr. in 2021. However, while that was a competitive fight, his encounter with Shakur was not.

So convincing was Lopez’s loss that he won only a single round on all three cards, and that single round was the same one on each of them.

There was no question that he had been defeated convincingly, and that can be a very difficult thing to deal with as a fighter. A loss may be a loss, but a convincing loss is one that leaves no question regarding what occurred.

But in his first fight back, it appears Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) will be returning to serious action, with recent news stating that he has agreed a deal to face Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (17-2, 13 KOs).

Romero is the current WBA welterweight champion, having been upgraded to full titlist after winning the interim strap against Ryan Garcia last year.

He has not been in the ring since then.

Lopez would be aiming for three-division champion status in his debut at welterweight, adding an extra element to a weight class many fans believe to be lacking in depth.

The fight will be going down in Las Vegas on the 22nd of August.
