Team Manny Pacquiao confirm why Floyd Mayweather rematch fell through

The rivals have run into yet another obstacle.

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr were gearing up to run it back this September.

Mayweather has since found himself embroiled in several worrying financial battles outside of the ring.

He was reportedly threatened by the IRS, who are believed to have considered revoking his passport over $7.3 million in unpaid taxes.

As a result, the veteran took multiple fights to stabilise his situation.

He now faces a new lawsuit from CSI Sports, who organised the Pacquiao bout.

They are seeking repayment of a $4.65 million advance from the contract.

It is unlikely he will compete in 2026 until these issues are resolved.

What did Manny Pacquiao’s team say?

The CEO of Manny Pacquiao Promotions, Jas Mathur, has since shared his understanding of the situation.

Mathur believes the original fight plan was never going to work.

He told Ring Magazine: “It’s no longer going to happen in September, and that’s obviously due to all the lawsuits and legal issues going on at the moment.

“CSI [rematch organisers] put it all out in the open about 10 days ago. This is stuff that everybody was trying to hold together and resolve behind the scenes, but a majority of it is out there.

“People still can’t figure out how it all transpired. But all of these things are intertwined: Floyd’s fight against Mike Tyson, Floyd’s next fight in boxing, returning to pro boxing, the Manny Pacquiao fight, obviously the one I have the most interest in, and of course the Greece fight.

“Everything is kind of intertwined together just based on how the contracts were done and how the deals were improperly structured.

”So the same fights were double sold. Even though Pacquiao was signed by CSI, both of these fights were Floyd’s return to professional boxing.

“One had an opponent as Pacquiao listed; the other was primarily Pacquiao as an opponent, but it could’ve been somebody else.

“From the Manny side, we’re running very smoothly because there aren’t multiple chefs in the kitchen.

“But I knew from the other side, because Floyd was already dealing with a lot of problems…I knew that we were going to run into problems.”

The rematch between Pacquiao and Mayweather is off the table for 2026, but fans are encouraged to remain hopeful for a 2027 date.
