Skye Nicolson upgraded to WBC world champion; first defence made official

Nicolson made two-weight champion after Ellie Scotney moves up.

Considered one of the most technically skilled women’s fighters in the world, Skye Nicolson can now boast holding a major title across two weight classes.

The former WBC featherweight world champion moved down to super-bantamweight after the first loss of her career to Tiara Brown last year.

Since that defeat, Nicolson has reeled off four straight wins, including two second-round stoppages. The third win of this run earned her the WBC interim title.

Last month, she defended that title against Mariah Turner, appearing in her home country of Australia for the first time since losing her title to Brown.

Open about wanting to face undisputed super-bantamweight champion Ellie Scotney, Nicolson has now been awarded with Scotney’s vacated WBC belt following the Briton’s decision to move up in weight.

While this isn’t the way she would have wanted to gain the belt, Nicolson is now a two-division champion nonetheless. And following being upgraded, her first challenger has already been agreed on.

Nicolson will face Miyo Yoshida, a former two-weight world titlist herself whose profile was raised following a dominant decision in 2023 over Ebanie Bridges, Nicolson’s countryman.

That win earned Yoshida the IBF bantamweight title, which she lost in her next fight, a rematch with America’s Shurretta Metcalf.

Since then, the Japanese fighter has moved up to super-bantamweight and put two wins together over nondescript opposition. Now 38, she is almost 8 years Nicolson’s senior.

Official details regarding the date and location of Nicolson vs. Yoshida have yet to be announced, but they are expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks.
