Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney are in preliminary talks to face each other.
Superfights don’t take place very often, but when they do, it is something extraordinarily special.
You can argue that the recent trend of big fights taking place started with Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia, a long-awaited matchup that was put together before Riyadh Season entered the sport.
Just a few months later, we saw Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr., a fight people had wanted for years. Again, that was before Riyadh Season announced themselves on the scene.
But when Riyadh Season did arrive, the superfights arrived with them.
Thanks to them, we have twice seen Tyson Fury face Oleksandr Usyk and Dmitry Bivol tussle with Artur Beterbiev. The fights that couldn’t be made suddenly were getting made, and it is exactly what boxing needed.
We could potentially have yet another one on our hands.
Earlier today, it was revealed by Mike Coppinger on the “Inside The Ring” show that Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney are currently in preliminary talks to face each other in a blockbuster fight.
In his last appearance, Shakur defeated Teofimo Lopez to become super-lightweight champion, while Haney beat Brian Norman Jr. to become a titleholder at welterweight.
Because they reign in separate divisions a weight apart, it is not certain what weight class a potential fight would take place at, and that is reportedly what is holding up discussions at the moment.
Both Americans are multi-weight technical masters with undefeated records and places in the top-ten pound-for-pound list.
It doesn’t really get much bigger than that.
