Shakur Stevenson breaks silence on Devin Haney rumours

Shakur Stevenson put himself in the top 3 of the pound for pound rankings after a dominant win over Teofimo Lopez this January.

Inside The Ring reported yesterday that preliminary talks were ongoing to stage Shakur Stevenson vs Devin Haney.

A fight certainly for the boxing purists, these fighters are two of the most skilled individuals not just in America but in world boxing.

Both fighters are still undefeated, and both are three weight world champions.

If the two are to meet, this would not just be a world title fight, this would be a shot at pound for pound greatness.

Mike Coppinger revealed on Inside The Ring that agreements around weight are currently holding up the discussions.

Shakur Stevenson (25-0, 11ko’s) is the current WBO and Ring Magazine super-lightweight champion.

Devin Haney (33-0, 15ko’s) is the welterweight WBO king, having moved up from super-lightweight in 2025.

In the aftermath of these reports, Shakur Stevenson has took to X to share his thoughts.

The man from Newark stated: “I know fans like to get excited and they could play with y’all heads and manipulate y’all easily but that rumour is cap for the 2nd time”.

“I haven’t heard one word about that, idk what they tryna cover up or disguise but for me and my team we haven’t heard sh*t”.

So there we have it, maybe a fight for the future, but likely not next.

At welterweight there are plenty of lucrative options at 147lbs for Haney.

Rematching Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20ko’s) is at the top of most boxing fans wish list, after the controversy over their first fight that ended in a no contest.

WBA champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (17-2, 13ko’s) is another option.

For Stevenson, the commercial value of unification fights at 140lbs are far less than at welterweight.

Whether he seeks a move to 147lbs in the near future is yet to be seen.
