Shakur Stevenson breaks silence after being stripped of WBC title

Shakur Stevenson hits back at the WBC after being stripped of his 135lbs lightweight title following his victory against Teofimo Lopez.

Shakur Stevenson (25-0, 11ko’s) defeated Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13ko’s) to win the WBO and Ring Magazine super lightweight last Saturday in a record breaking Ring Magazine event at Madison Square Garden.

The fight was Stevenson’s first fight at 140lbs, and victory saw him become a four weight world champion at just 28 years old.

While this belt was not on the line in this fight, Stevenson entered the ring as the WBC lightweight champion, he defended this belt just 7 months ago against number one challenger William Zepeda (33-1, 27ko’s).

Despite now becoming the Ring Magazine king at 140lbs, Stevenson expressed a number of times that 140lbs is not his natural weight class and that the move up was for legacy and opportunity purposes and not a weight issue, with the man from Newark wanting to return to 135lbs.

However, Mauricio Sulamain and the WBC have officially stripped Shakur Stevenson of his 13lbs crown.

A statement from the WBC read: “In light of Champion Stevenson now being the reigning WBO Super Lightweight World Champion and consistent with the WBC rules and regulations, the WBC has declared vacant its Lightweight World title”.

In response, Stevenson via X stated: “100k to some crooks who don’t deserve it? Nah Lielani I rather give it to you baby girl… The WBC didn’t even have sh*t to do with this fight and it’s eating them alive take your belt it don’t make me”.

“And I just paid these dudes after my last fight, because yall got beef with Bud so come at me for it”.

Friend of Stevenson and all time great Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford was also involved in a dispute with the WBC due to sanction fees, this saw Bud stripped of his WBC super middleweight title.
