Shakur Stevenson agrees to fight Ryan Garcia but only with weight stipulation

Shakur Stevenson calls for a showdown with Ryan Garcia, but will only move to welterweight if a rehydration clause is in effect.

Both fighters are coming off of career defining victories.

For Shakur Stevenson (25-0, 11ko’s), a shutout points win over Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13ko’s) saw him become a four weight world champion.

Now up at super lightweight, Stevenson is the WBO and Ring Magazine champion.

In the aftermath of this victory, the Ring Magazine has placed Shakur as number three in the pound for pound rankings.

The man from Newark is looking to fight the biggest names in the sport, to further define his legacy.

British star Conor Benn (24-1, 14ko’s) got in a heated exchange post fight with the slick southpaw, but with Benn’s next fight being at 150lbs, this is unlikely.

Two of America’s biggest names are up at welterweight, Devin Haney (33-0, 15ko’s and Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20ko’s).

Whilst fight fans are desperate to see them two revisit their immensely controversial rivalry, Stevenson has thrown his hat in the mix.

Speaking to the Night Cap Show, Stevenson stated: “We can fight at 14olbs, I have no intention of going up (to welterweight)”.

“I don’t want a rehydration clause at 140lbs”.

“I only want the clause if I go up to 147lbs”.

Rehydration clauses have been a scrutinised topic, especially in recent times.

Most famously in the recent Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn saga.

With Benn moving up to middleweight to make this fight happen, it was signed that there would be a 10lbs rehydration clause for a second day weigh in.

160lbs was difficult enough in itself for Eubank Jr, and many point the reasoning behind Benn’s rematch victory towards the weight stipulations in the contract.

Unlike the IBF, the governing body that Garcia is champion with, the WBC, has no rules on rehydration.
