Super-welterweight contender offers to move down in weight for a domestic dust-up.
The terms “boxing fan” and “fight fan” are generally used interchangeably. They are labels that are usually attached to the same group of people, and that’s those who are fans of professional boxing.
But when someone thinks of a fight, it’s not a masterclass from Floyd Mayweather Jr. that they picture in their head. It’s not an intelligent, point-scoring effort that gets a nod of the head from the aficionado, but a blood-and-guts war between two sluggers that gets the casual drooling.
So, what we can gather from this is that a boxing fan is someone who can appreciate the technical side of things, and a fight fan is someone who loves to see nothing more nuanced than a good, old-fashioned scrap.
In short, they aren’t the same type of people. Sure, you can be both a fight fan and a boxing fan, but one isn’t necessarily the other.
Whether you agree with this assessment or not, true fans of the sport can name those who embody both styles. This remains true across countries and eras.
For example, if you want an instance of a modern-day technician in British boxing, you look at someone like Sunny Edwards.
If you want an example of a modern-day British fighter who just goes to war, you look at someone like Sam Eggington.
Eggington is universally considered one of the most exciting gladiators in British boxing today, and if you’ve seen any of his fights, you will know why. The Smethwick man has been described as an “either you break me or I’ll break you” type of fighter, and you can’t fight like Eggington without breaking a few eggs.
The former British and Commonwealth welterweight champion also held the IBO title at super-welterweight, where he most recently beat Lee Cutler in 2025.
Throughout his career, Eggington has notched wins over names such as Ashley Theophane and Paulie Malignaggi, and he has been to war with the likes of Ted Cheeseman and Abass Baraou.
And on a few occasions, when people have thought that Eggington was done, he’s come back with a win to keep his career going. Such was the case when he lost to Dennis Hogan in 2023, then stopped unbeaten knockout artist Joe Pigford just two fights later.
For Sam Eggington, it’s never been about the win. It’s always been about the spectacle.
Now Eggington fancies a fight with another man who perfectly mirrors exactly that spirit.
Conah Walker is the most recent holder of the British and Commonwealth titles Eggington held at welterweight. Like Eggington, Walker regards a single step back a sign of surrender.
He burst onto the scene by stopping unbeaten prospect Cyrus Pattinson and did the same to Lloyd Germain in his next fight. He gave Lewis Crocker all he could handle in a decision loss many thought should have been a win for Walker.
Since then, Walker has provided for fairytale-type stuff. After being outboxed for over ten rounds by the hauntingly difficult Harry Scarff, Walker landed a single punch in the 11th round and finished him off from there.
And when he was last seen in December, Walker ground down unbeaten former Olympic silver medallist Pat McCormack, taking him out in the very last round.
Walker was recently in talks with Ekow Essuman, yet another all-action fighter. However, those negotiations broke down, and Walker has been struggling to find an opponent since.
Well, Sam Eggington is all too keen to take him on.
On his Twitter, Eggington wrote that he’s “more than up” for the matchup (in spite of recent rumours of a European title fight with Milan Prat) and encouraged Walker to contact Jon Pegg, his manager.
There can be almost no better meeting of two no-nonsense British warriors than Sam Eggington (36-9, 20 KOs) and Conah Walker (17-3-1, 8 KOs).
In Walker, Eggington will finally find someone who enjoys doing nothing but swing away just as much as him, and that pairing can only be a terrific thing for fight fans.
That’s because Sam ‘The Savage’ Eggington and Conah ‘The Wolf’ Walker are action heroes each, sharks of the very same shiver.
Hearing @ConahWalker can’t find anyone to fight him, with all respect I’m local and more than up for it. @mrsamjones88 give @jonpegg74a call and we will get this sorted before Monday morning 👊@DAZNBoxing @MatchroomBoxing @EddieHearn
