Garcia responds to Benn.
Both Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn are amongst the most controversial names in all of boxing. Having both experienced drama involving failed drug tests, they have faced similar levels of scrutiny from the public.
For a while, both also possessed high profiles despite not having ever been world champions, though that is now not the case on Garcia’s side.
Regardless, both now occupy the welterweight division, and a WBC title clash between the two would draw the attention of plenty.
However, given that Benn has now signed with Zuffa Boxing, that matchup could prove difficult to make. Zuffa’s plan to get rid of all sanctioning bodies would call the fight’s sanctioning into doubt, and Oscar De La Hoya (Garcia’s promoter at Golden Boy Promotions) is not exactly friends with Dana White.
Still, title or no title, it’s a pairing that would be very popular. After all, controversy sells in boxing more than any other sport, and when that controversy is attached to two recognised fighters, how could a fight between them not do well?
Earlier today, Benn posted on social media a picture of him and Garcia, showing the two shaking hands. Above the image, Benn included a message that encouraged Garcia to “sign the contract”.
This would imply that Benn has made an offer to the American already. However, Garcia would respond a few hours later, saying that is definitely not the case.
“If I actually had the contract, Conor”, wrote Garcia, “I would’ve signed as fast as one of these hands will touch your jaw come fight night.”
There had been rumours that the two were to fight in the United States in August, and whether that takes place or not, it’s clear that both men are up for it.
If I actually had the contract Conor I would’ve signed that as fast as one of these hands will touch your jaw come fight night.
