Ryan Garcia has been called out for a world title showdown at super welterweight, just days after defeating Mario Barrios in Sin City.
Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20ko’s) became a world champion for the first time last Saturday.
Nicknamed as ‘King Ry’, the Californian born star rocked Las Vegas, defeating Mario Barrios (29-3-2, 18ko’s).
Garcia dropped Barrios in the first minute of the fight and went on to win via a dominant unanimous decision.
Recent years of Garcia’s career have been up and down to say the least.
A failed drugs test, a year long suspension, and a flat performance against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero shaded doubt on Garcia’s future.
However, Garcia proved to the world that they shouldn’t doubt him, and now owns a valuable piece of the crown in a welterweight division full of superstars.
Conor Benn (24-1, 14ko’s), who is now signed to ZUFFA Boxing, is mandatory challenger for Garcia’s WBC crown.
Rematching Devin Haney (33-0, 15ko’s) will undoubtedly be a mega fight in the American boxing calendar, and will also be a unification fight.
Shakur Stevenson faced off with Garcia immediately in the aftermath of Saturday’s victory.
This highlights the star power of the now number four ranked welterweight with the Ring Magazine.
King Ry looked strong at 147lbs, and has been offered a world title fight at super welterweight.
Newly crowned IBF 154lbs king Josh Kelly (18-1-1, 9ko’s) has put his name in the hat.
Sunderland born Kelly spoke to talkSPORT boxing and stated:
If there is a big name out there, I’m all ears”.
“I tweeted this morning, Ryan Garcia if he wanted to become a two-weight world champion and step up to 154lbs”.
“It could be the Battle of the Pretty Boys.”
Sources suggest Kelly and Matchroom have been in early conversations with unified champion Xander Zayas.
Eddie Hearn has declared a desire to stage a Josh Kelly fight at the Stadium of Light, the home of Sunderland Football Club.
