Ryan Garcia was handed a stern warning following his recent mistake.
Ryan Garcia is gearing up to challenge Mario Barrios for his WBC welterweight world title next weekend.
The rivals are set to clash on Saturday, February 21, at the iconic T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
As per standard protocol, both fighters had to undergo a mandatory 14-day weight check ahead of the contest.
However, Garcia failed to meet the initial deadline.
As a result of his non-compliance, the American superstar was fined $5,000.
According to Boxing Scene, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman told Garcia’s team on February 10: “Ryan Garcia’s 14-day weight check was supposed to be received this past Saturday, February 7.
“Champion Barrios did comply with the video of this mandatory safety rule. The WBC hereby imposes a $5000 fine for non-compliance.
“We expect to receive the weight video either today or first thing tomorrow morning, depending on his training schedule.
“If we do not receive this video by then, we will be making a press statement and will contact the boxing commission with this concern.”
Ryan Garcia later submitted video evidence showing himself being weighed, tipping the scales at 154.2lbs at the time of recording.
Which ensured he met the requirement of being within five per cent of the divisional limit.
Now, the 27-year-old turns his full focus to next weekend’s opportunity – a shot at becoming a world champion for the first time in his career.
Garcia’s most recent outing ended in defeat to Rolando Romero in a lacklustre contest last May.
Despite that setback, he has worked his way back into the title picture at 147lbs.
So much so that heading into the bout with Barrios, many believe ‘King Ry’ can emerge victorious.
