Garcia issues a challenge to Warren.
Ryan Garcia is one of the most popular figures in the boxing world, his large social media following a testament to his mainstream notability.
But for a while, Garcia was one of the most famous boxers to not have been a world champion. However, that changed this February when he defeated Mario Barrios.
In doing so, “King Ry” became the WBC welterweight champion, finally fulfilling the potential that was expected of him early in his career.
Outside of his accomplishments, though, the American is notorious for having been involved in a number of controversies in and out of the boxing ring.
Of these, one is a victory over Devin Haney that was overturned to a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for ostarine, a performance-enhancing drug.
That win ensured Garcia served a one-year ban from boxing. When he returned last year, he surprisingly lost to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, the WBA (Regular) title that had been on the line meaning Romero was upgraded to full WBA champion after Jaron Ennis chose to move up from welterweight.
Regardless, Garcia has now challenged Queensberry Promotions boss Frank Warren to a bet regarding the upcoming FIFA World Cup match between England and Mexico.
Garcia, an American of Mexican ancestry, put out a Tweet a few hours ago, challenging the legendary British promoter to a bet on Sunday, the day the game is set to take place.
He then finished the post by voicing his support for Mexico.
Whether this bet takes place or not, we will have to see, but both men–as different as they are while operating in the same world–have been known for their competitive spirit over the years.
Hey frank we don’t speak much but if you want a bet for Sunday let me know
