Manager reveals rematch clause is in place for Anthony Joshua fight.
When it was rumoured that Anthony Joshua would be making his ring return on the 25th of July in Saudi Arabia, the boxing world naturally began to speculate on just who it was he would be facing.
A number of names were thrown around, the general idea being that though it was Anthony Joshua we were talking about, he deserved a soft touch after his traumatic experience in December, especially since a gigantic event against Tyson Fury was thought to be in the pipeline.
At no point did anyone correctly guess who his opponent would ultimately be.
It was officially revealed that Joshua would be facing Kristian Prenga, an Albanian with 20 wins in 21 fights, all of his wins being by knockout.
At this name, the majority of the boxing public drew a blank, for Prenga is not a fighter familiar to many outside of truly hard-core enjoyers of the sport.
While his record is very good on paper, Joshua is far and away the most notable fighter Prenga will ever face. As a result, the Briton will be made a massive favourite on the night.
Curiously, though, it has been revealed by Keith Sullivan (Prenga’s manager) that there is a rematch clause in place for the fight.
In an interview with Pro Boxing Fans, Sullivan was asked about there being a rematch clause and was also queried on the possibility of a fight with Tyson Fury should Prenga pull off the massive upset.
Sullivan replied, “If it happens [Prenga beating Joshua], we’re gonna look–you can see the giddiness comin’ across my face–you know, we would look to fight Fury. There is a rematch clause, but I just think if Joshua doesn’t win this fight, he’s finished. It’s over for him.”
Earlier on in the interview, Sullivan brought up that last time Joshua was set up to fight someone (Deontay Wilder), his opponent was beaten and the fight was scuppered.
It is Sullivan’s belief that something similar will happen here, just on Joshua’s side this time. In his opinion, the Englishman’s team has made a miscalculation in choosing to fight his man.
