Queensberry to headline in Dublin with anticipated clash.
When last Queensberry Promotions rocked up to the Emerald Isle, it was on the occasion of Anthony Cacace’s WBA super-featherweight title victory over Jazza Dickens.
But it wasn’t the Belfast man who became the main point of conversation afterwards, and nor was it the several other prospects who put on some good performances further down the card.
No, it was Pierce O’Leary.
Featuring in the co-main event, O’Leary put on a clinic to thrash and bash Maxi Hughes, the technician from Yorkshire who usually provides for a very difficult night’s work.
Instead of some of Hughes’s other opponents, O’Leary faced practically no issue whatsoever and battered the Englishman into a 5th-round corner retirement to win the vacant IBO super-lightweight title.
It was a performance that impressed, that wowed, that made people turn their heads and say, “This guy could actually be something special.”
What was more impressive was that on that night in March, Hughes was a replacement opponent who was stepping in on relatively short notice for Mark Chamberlain, a fighter with a wholly different style.
Chamberlain was coming off of a rip-roaring war with Jack Rafferty, a fight so competitive that the official decision of a draw disappointed nobody.
The fight with O’Leary was highly anticipated to be a situation of styles blending beautifully, but Chamberlain would sadly pull out due to injury.
However, Queensberry have now announced their next card in Dublin, and it will be headlined by the rescheduled clash between the two.
O’Leary (19-0, 11 KOs) will defend his IBO belt against Chamberlain (17-1-1, 12 KOs) on the 1st of August at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland.
“Big Bang” will be met with “Thunder” when these men collide, and based on their respective ways of fighting, it is expected to make for absolutely magnificent viewing.
