Queensberry announce the homecoming of unbeaten Southampton talent.
British fans are known for being the most vocal and supportive in all of boxing, and they resultantly create the most electric atmospheres.
The atmosphere becomes even more electric when a fighter returns to his hometown. On nights like that, you’d swear that nowhere in the world was out of earshot of the noise.
The city of Southampton has yet to produce a world champion. However, that may not be the case soon enough.
Earlier today, Queensberry Promotions announced the homecoming of likely the most promising fighter from Southampton currently.
Ryan ‘The Piranha’ Garner (19-0, 10 KOs) has previously held British, Commonwealth, and European honours in his division of super-featherweight.
After a stop-start career, Garner returned a couple of years ago and has been in the best form of his life since, scoring wins over Liam Dillon, Archie Sharp, and Reece Bellotti.
It was the Bellotti victory that was the best of Garner’s career, and after being out since then, he returned in March to stop the 19-12-2 Cristian Bielma on the Jazza Dickens vs. Anthony Cacace undercard.
It was thought that Garner would perhaps be fighting the winner of that bout, and while that won’t be the case, he is nonetheless knocking on the door of world-level opportunities.
Garner will be facing Michael Magnesi (26-2, 13 KOs), Italy’s former IBO super-featherweight champion.
Magnesi has previously lost a split decision to the aforementioned Cacace, the former IBF and current WBA world champion. Magnesi’s other loss came to Masanori Rikiishi, who would go on to be the first to take Eduardo Núnez the full distance in a challenge for the IBF world title.
Garner and Magnesi will be throwing down for the vacant WBC interim belt, a trinket that will make the winner the rightful challenger to WBC world champion O’Shaquie Foster.
On the undercard, there is also an intriguing light-heavyweight contest between another Southampton fighter in former British and Commonwealth champion Lewis Edmondson (11-1, 3 KOs) and former Commonwealth, European, and IBO champion Lyndon Arthur (25-3, 16 KOs).
Punches will fly at Southampton’s St. Mary’s Stadium on the 20th of June.
