Callum Smith vs David Morrell purse bid officially cancelled as representatives successfully negotiate a deal for the pair to fight for the WBO interim light heavyweight title.
The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) have confirmed that the purse bid scheduled for today for the WBO interim light heavyweight championship fight between Callum Smith (31-2, 22ko’s) and David Morrell (12-1, 9ko’s) has been officially cancelled.
Callum Smith is nearing an opportunity to become a two weight world champion, the fight against David Morrell has been ordered by the WBO to determine who will be mandatory for the unified champion Dmitry Bivol (24-1, 12ko’s).
The former WBC super middleweight champion was victorious last February in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he defeated Joshua Buatsi in a 2025 fight of the year nominee.
The scouser handed Buatsi (20-1, 13ko’s) his only defeat of his career, proving that he is still one of Britain’s best fighters at age 35.
Callum Smith’s career defeats have been at the hands of the sports very best, Canelo Alvarez and Artur Beterbiev.
Representative of the WBO Gustavo Olivieri has formally announced that: “WBO acknowledges receipt of written confirmation from Matchroom Boxing & Warriors Boxing/PBC. We have a deal is in place and the event date is secured. Purse bid is hereby canceled. Announcement is forthcoming”.
Previously, the chances of getting a deal done between Matchroom and PBC may have been slim, however in the new age of promotional cooperation this fight will be announced imminently.
Promoter of Matchroom Boxing Eddie Hearn announced last week that the fight will take place in the UK, whether that will be in the Echo Arena in Smith’s home city of Liverpool or elsewhere that is yet to be confirmed.
Tyson Fury’s long awaited return to the ring was announced for April 11th in the United Kingdom, with Arslanbek Makhmudov the opponent.
With the undercard yet to be announced, Callum Smith vs David Morrell could be a co-main option for this Netflix event.
