The lead promoter of Derek Chisora vs Deontay Wilder is calling for for Oleksandr Usyk to vacate his IBF title for the winner on April 4th.
Derek Chisora (36-13, 23ko’s) will face Deontay Wilder (44-4-1, 43ko’s) at the O2 Arena in an Easter weekend bonanza live on DAZN.
It will be both fighters 50th fights respectively, and is set to be a spectacle to close the careers of both fighters.
Just a number of fights ago, this would have been deemed an extremely dangerous fight for ‘Del Boy’.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, the London born heavyweight is now the bookies favourite to be victorious.
At 42 years old, Chisora has managed to string a run of impressive victories together that has seen him climb the IBF rankings.
Victories over notable heavyweights like Otto Wallin (28-3, 16ko’s) and Joe Joyce (16-4, 15ko’s) has put him on the edge of world championship opportunities.
Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15ko’s) will fight Rico Verhoeven (1-0, 1ko) in May, with only his WBC heavyweight title on the line at this moment in time.
Whether this means Usyk will be stripped of his IBF belt is yet to be seen.
One man who is pushing for this reality is promoter Kalle Sauerland.
The Sauerland brothers are the head huncho’s over at MFPro, the lead promoter of Chisora vs Wilder.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Sauerland stated:
“Oleksandr Usyk has not had one single mandatory defence of the IBF in his reign as heavyweight champion, as IBF heavyweight champion”.
“Given Chisora’s position at the very top of the heavyweight rankings right now, and Wilder’s position as well, and given the high-profile nature of the fight it would be an amazing addition for them to be able to fight for the belt”.
With the fight now just a month away, it is yet to be seen whether Chisora will have the opportunity to write his own fairytale ending.
