Prichard Colon passes away following tragic 2015 boxing match.
As fans of boxing, we are always aware of the countless bad things that could happen any time we watch a fight. After all, this sport that we love so much is based around two men punching each other, often very hard and often in the head.
As a result, we know all too well that when we tune in to a fight, when we cheer on our favoured fighter, absolutely anything could happen. One punch could cause an entire world of tragedy.
But when we watch, we often put this to the back of our minds. Because for a moment, these men we see swinging away at each other–so brave and so willing to risk their lives to entertain–are more than just men.
It takes just one bad night–just one punch–to pull us back to reality.
The events of the night of the 17th of October, 2015–when Prichard Colon fought Terrel Williams–are some of the saddest and most shameful in the long history of boxing.
Disqualified in a fight he was constantly fouled in, Colon was taken to the hospital with a bleed on the brain (caused by repeated punches to the back of the head from Williams), an injury he would never truly recover from.
Colon required constant care provided by his family after being released from hospital. Made an honorary WBC world champion in 2021, his story became a topic known to those outside of the immediate boxing circle.
Very sadly, it was confirmed by Colon’s father on social media that his son passed away today at 33 years old.
Rest in peace to Prichard Colon. Our thoughts are with all who loved him during this extraordinarily difficult time.
Prichard Colon has passed away aged 33, his father has confirmed on social media.
Colon was a rising Puerto Rican boxer who suffered a brain haemorrhage and was in a coma for seven months after the first defeat of his career in 2015.
