Oscar De La Hoya names opponent he wants next for Jaron Ennis

De La Hoya reveals his preferred next opponent for Jaron Ennis.

In boxing, just because a fight is big doesn’t mean it ends up being made. We have seen countless examples of this throughout the years.

Still, it is no less disappointing when a fight that everyone wants to see ends up not taking place, and this is true for both fans and pundits.

And in recent times, we have seen big fights get made years too late, which some would argue might be worse than just never seeing them in the first place.

Either way, it is not such a frequent thing that a big matchup gets made exactly when fans want it to. So, when that happens, it is a very special thing.

This makes it especially frustrating when the opportunity is there for such a fight to happen, but it ultimately does not materialise.

A fight of this description would be Jaron Ennis vs. Vergil Ortiz Jr., an all-American super-welterweight showdown that fans have been asking for ever since both men became part of the 154-pound class.

There were rumours that the pairing was being put together recently, but negotiations ultimately broke down.

However, following Ennis’s highly impressive win over Xander Zayas to become unified champion on Saturday, Oscar De La Hoya has stated he would like “Boots” to face Ortiz.

In a video posted to social media, the former six-weight world champion and current promoter stated, “‘Boots’ Ennis, what a great fight. You are a machine. Zayas, a little inexperienced, but you will be back. You’re a great fighter. Let’s make the biggest fight in boxing today: Vergil Ortiz-‘Boots’ Ennis. Let’s go.”
