Oscar De La Hoya has declared that Saturday’s world title fight against Mario Barrios will not be Ryan Garcia’s last under the Golden Boy.
Oscar De La Hoya and Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20ko’s) have had a turbulent relationship over years.
Golden Boy Promotions have undoubtedly played a major role in shaping Garcia into one of the sports biggest commercial draws.
Nicknamed as ‘King Ry’, Garcia fights Mario Barrios (29-2-2, 18ko’s) on Saturday at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas.
Now at welterweight, victory on Saturday will see Garcia become a world champion for the first time.
This victory will return Garcia to the summit to the sport, after a chaotic and tough couple of years for the man from California.
A failed drug test in the aftermath of defeating Devin Haney turned the result into a no contest, and landed Garcia with a one year ban from the sport.
In his return, Garcia underwhelmed on the biggest stage in a Ring Magazine event in Times Square, losing via unanimous decision to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero.
Garcia has claimed that Saturday’s fight will be his last under the Golden Boy Promotions banner, and that he will be a free agent.
Contrarily, De La Hoya has disputed this statement.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV De La Hoya stated:
“No, I don’t think he knows. We have several fights with him.”
“I am proud to promote him as a young kid, and now see him evolve”.
“I don’t know why or what happened with the differences we had”.
“It is what it is, I’m still proud to promote him, and to get him to this world title shot”.
“When I can help a fighter get to their dreams, that’s where I get most proud as a promoter”.
Golden Boy Promotions seem to have resolved issues with broadcaster partner DAZN.
They recently announced Arnold Barboza vs Kenneth Sims at the Honda Center on March 14th
