Oscar Collazo to rematch old foe in title unification fight

Unified champion set for three-belt rematch.

Ever heard the one about the 5’2″, 105-pound guy who knocks opponents out with ease?

It sounds like a joke, but there’s no punchline.

There is a lot of punching, though.

The Ring ranks Oscar Collazo in their top-ten pound-for-pound list, something which plenty agree with. However, Collazo largely flew under the radar until November of 2024.

And when he finally made a blip on everyone’s radar, people really began to take notice.

After all, how could they not when you knock out a man with “Knockout” in his name?

Knockout CP Freshmart (real name Thammanoon Niyomtrong) was the WBA super-strawweight champion and the longest-reigning titleholder in the sport, having held his belt since 2016.

Being 25-0 and having a lot of experience at the top level, Freshmart was expected to be a problem for Collazo.

He wasn’t.

Not even nearly.

Collazo dropped him three times and stopped him in the 7th round. And since then, he has recorded stoppages over Edwin Cano Hernández and the wonderfully-named Jayson Vayson.

But now Collazo wishes to add a third belt to the two he already has, and he’ll be facing a familiar face to do that.

Collazo was just 6-0 when he beat Melvin Jerusalem to become WBO super-strawweight champion. And in the time following, Jerusalem has gone on a five-fight winning streak, including two wins over Yudai Shigeoka that saw him win and defend the WBC super-strawweight title.

The two are set to meet again in a three-belt throwdown that will reportedly take place on the 14th of March in Southern California, just under three years since their first meeting.

Collazo (13-0, 10 KOs) will be the favourite to pull off the repeat victory, but Jerusalem (25-3, 12 KOs) will likely put up an even better fight this time around.

Either way, these are the straws that, in carrying their division, are breaking their own backs.
