Unbeaten heavyweight to face durable foe.
On Saturday, Ben Whittaker will take over from Callum Smith, as he will be headlining the Liverpool Arena in Merseyside against Braian Nahuel Suarez.
While it is not the interim title clash between Smith and David Morrell as originally intended, it should still be interesting to see the flashy Whittaker make his ring return.
Other than Whittaker, there exists a few interesting fights on the undercard, one of whom is a very exciting heavyweight prospect.
Leo Atang (5-0, 5 KOs) is a 19-year-old from York, Yorkshire. Standing 6’6″, the young heavyweight won his first three fights in the opening round. After dispatching of Amine Boucetta in the third round, he performed yet another first-round finish over Dan Garber in February.
The big teen has fought only a combined 7 rounds across fights that were set for a total of 22. For this reason, it is important that he faces someone with the type of durability that won’t result in them instantly crumbling beneath his fists.
In his next opponent, he might have just that.
Atang is scheduled to fight Viktar Chvarkou, a Kazakhstan-born, Watford-based Belarusian who sports a record of 6-32.
On paper, those are not good numbers. However, a journeyman is accurately measured not by his number of losses, but by his number of stoppage losses. And in Chvarkou’s 32 defeats, he has merely been stopped three times.
Those three stoppages were at the hands of Evgeny Romanov, Nelson Hysa, and Arlo Stephens, while those who have failed to stop Chvarkou include Lewis Williams, Tommy Welch, and Kash Ali.
Chvarkou, too, has campaigned at cruiserweight and gone the distance with the likes of Tommy Fletcher, Callum Johnson (twice), Fabio Turchi, Oronzo Birardi, Ellis Zorro, and Aurel Ignat.
So, if young Yorkshireman Atang manages to get rid of Chvarkou inside the distance, it will definitely tell us something about the type of power he possesses.
