Former 2016 gold medalist is set to return to the Olympics in 2028, switching national allegiances to a new nation.
A former gold medalist by the name of Tony Yoka sets his sights on doing it all over again in 2028 as he vows to return to the amateur scene.
Yoka achieved his greatest amateur success at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where he won the gold medal in the super-heavyweight division, defeating Britain’s Joe Joyce in the final.
His amateur style focused on movement, clean scoring punches, and ring intelligence rather than sheer power.
After turning professional in 2017, Yoka entered the heavyweight ranks with high expectations and significant media attention in France.
He built an early unbeaten streak while showcasing his strong jab and disciplined approach.
As the level of competition increased, he faced tougher challenges that tested his endurance and adaptability in longer professional bouts.
Despite setbacks, Yoka remains an important figure in French boxing, known for his Olympic pedigree and continued ambition in the heavyweight division.
Yoka has a professional record of 15-3, 12ko’s.
He was rumoured to fight Anthony Joshua in 2025, but talks never materialised.
Narrow defeats to Martin Bakole and Carlos Takam have stagnated his professional career, and it seems Yoka is set to return to the amateur scene in the near future.
Reported by RMC Sport Combat, “Tony Yoka will represent the Democratic Republic of Congo and will attempt to win another gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
With these games being over two years away, it is believed that Yoka will have at least one more professional fight at heavyweight.
As the heavyweight division is the blue ribbon division of the sport, there are still mega pay days in the professional scene for 6″7 giant.
Yoka, who signed to Queensberry in 2025, will look to land a heavyweight blockbuster against one of Frank Warren’s many heavyweight stars.
