Oleksandr Usyk names ideal opponent for his ‘last dance’

The heavyweight king has already planned the end of his illustrious career.

Oleksandr Usyk has certainly enjoyed a remarkable and highly successful career in the ring so far.

Since turning professional in 2013, the Ukrainian star has remained undefeated, building a reputation as one of boxing’s most skilled and intelligent fighters.

Over the years, Usyk has faced a series of elite opponents across multiple divisions, yet none have been able to hand him the first loss of his professional career.

The last time Oleksandr Usyk stepped into the ring, he delivered a devastating stoppage victory over Daniel Dubois, stopping the British heavyweight with a brutal fifth-round knockout last July in front of a roaring crowd of more than 90,000 fans.

Since that emphatic win, the 39-year-old Ukrainian has been watching developments across boxing’s glamour heavyweight division from the sidelines while weighing up his next move.

Now, however, Usyk is preparing to make his return to the ring.

On May 23, the undefeated champion is set to defend his WBC heavyweight world title against kickboxing superstar Rico Verhoeven.

Although attention has already turned to what will follow.

Oleksandr Usyk told Associated Press: “In my head, Tyson Fury, it’s the last dance.”

The rivalry between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury is already firmly established.

The two heavyweights met twice in 2024, with Usyk getting the better of Fury on both occasions, delivering composed, clinical performances.

Given the history between them and Fury’s repeated calls to avenge those defeats, a trilogy bout would make plenty of sense.

One thing that does seem certain is that the 39-year-old appears to already have the final stages of his career carefully mapped out.
