Jai Opetaia IBF world championship belt nowhere to be seen in first face-off with Brandon Glanton ahead of inaugural Zuffa boxing title fight.
Normally in Jai Opetaia (29-0, 23ko’s) fight weeks the talk is around the devastating power and aggression of the cruiserweight king.
But not this time.
All the talk has been surrounding the conflicting ideas of Zuffa Boxing, the governing bodies, and Jai Opetaia himself.
Zuffa Boxing, fronted by Dana White, and financially backed by Turki Al-Sheikh and SELA have caused major disruption in 2026.
Signing Jai Opetaia was their first major signing of intent.
The current IBF and Ring Magazine cruiserweight champion has openly been chasing legacy defining unification fights.
A potential fight with the winner of David Benavidez vs Gilberto Ramirez could be on the table, and this will provide the Australian the opportunity to capture the belts he desires.
Where the confusion sets in is that his new promoter Zuffa plan to disregard the governing bodies, and have created their own belt.
The Zuffa cruiserweight world title will be on the line this Sunday.
IBF are believed to have given Opetaia an ultimatum, to choose between fighting for their belt or the Zuffa belt, not both.
Whilst a definitive conclusion has not been announced, the first face off of fight week has hinted at a decision.
Opetaia faced off with Brandon Glanton (21-3, 18ko’s) with only his Ring Magazine belt over his arm.
The coming days will show the boxing world a lot more about the legitimacy and power of Zuffa Boxing.
