New information regarding tragic incident comes to light.
It was in December of last year–the very same month as his victory over Jake Paul–that Anthony Joshua got into a car crash while in Nigeria, the home of his ancestral heritage.
While Joshua himself sustained minor physical injuries, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele–who were passengers in the car alongside the heavyweight boxing superstar–would both tragically lose their lives.
With Ghami serving as Joshua’s strength coach and Ayodele as his personal trainer, the two men were not only team members of the popular Briton, but also close friends.
The crash occurred when Joshua and his companions were being transported to visit Joshua’s father in Ogun State, and Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode (the driver of the vehicle) collided into a parked lorry after losing control of his Lexus SUV.
It would come out that the 46-year-old Kayode did not have a valid driver’s license in Nigeria, something he is currently facing a charge for alongside a charge of causing death by dangerous driving. Kayode has denied both of these charges.
Additionally, the court has now heard that directly before the fatal collision took place, Kayode attempted an overtake of a moving truck. That was when he crashed into the stationary lorry that was being driven by 35-year-old Abubakar Adamu.
Adamu himself has denied a charge against him of obstructing the free flow of traffic.
It is also understood that police have yet to take a statement from Joshua following the crash, something that Kayode’s lawyer questioned Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo (of the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division) about.
According to Taiwo, the reason for this is that he doesn’t have Joshua’s number, also stating that “efforts are ongoing” regarding this matter.
Ultimately, the trial has been adjourned until the 10th of September.
