Mike Tyson to launch amateur boxing showcase

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson set to showcase amateur talent.

Mike Tyson, the former undisputed heavyweight champion who competed from 1985 to (officially, at least) 2024, is someone who is widely recognised even far outside of the boxing circle. His exploits in and out of the ring have made him a very popular figure to those who don’t even follow the sport of boxing.

This star power is truly rare to come by, and it’s why–over 35 years after the true end to his athletic prime–his name still regularly makes the headlines.

This was demonstrated no better than when a 58-year-old ‘Iron’ Mike stepped into the ring 19 years after his initial retirement to fight YouTuber Jake Paul in 2024. This event was widely derided as a farce, a clown show, and even as an embarrassment to the sport itself. However, it still got over 108 million views on Netflix, and that was despite severe technical errors with the stream.

This is because even though Mike Tyson himself may age (and indeed, he will be turning 60 this year), the reputation that he built in his prime never will. Many believed that if he just connected once on the influencer’s chin, he could perform a knockout that would–if only for a brief moment–transport us back to when he annihilated men ten times the ability of Jake Paul.

Alas, it wasn’t to be, and Paul went on to woefully outpoint the slow, plodding Tyson who didn’t even cast a shadow that resembled his former self.

But over a year later, the man who terrorised the heavyweights over 30 years ago is in the news for a different reason.

This being that he is now launching an amateur boxing showcase to help build and display the next generation of boxing talent.

The three-day, invite-only event will be held at Las Vegas’s Radiant Brand Complex from the 12th of March to the 14th, and it will serve to provide American amateur boxers with the type of exposure usually only enjoyed by professionals. Belts will be awarded to the winners and one fighter will receive “Fighter of the Night” recognition.

Upon the event’s commencement, Tyson will lead an exclusive conversation regarding discipline, mindset, and lessons he learned over the course of his professional career. The second day will feature open workouts with Tyson himself, and the third will showcase bouts involving young talents (including potential future Olympians) with a live audience and media to enjoy the action in person.

And for Tyson, a man who was such a troubled youth, the role of mentor to the young is perhaps the best one he can play at this stage of his life.
