Mike Tyson speaks on American boxing in the present day.
Mike Tyson is known to today’s fans as boxing’s purest, most concentrated source of unbridled fury, even decades after the end of his athletic prime.
‘Iron’ Mike was an absolute ghoul in the ring, banishing his foes to a separate realm of unconsciousness that had a door only he possessed the key to.
We all know him. Not just boxing fans, but everyday people. For those more in the know, his destructive victories and personal controversies are not new information, and his four-year prison sentence isn’t, either.
In the 30 years since Tyson was released, he has evolved into a deep, ruminative, and even philosophical figure. He often speaks of the pugilistic monster he was in the poignant tones that only a far more mellow, thoughtful character can.
This also extends to Tyson’s attitude on things in general, where he has adopted a far more laid-back approach to any given subject.
In recent times, Tyson has been in the spotlight for a Super Bowl advertisement and an upcoming amateur boxing showcase.
In an interview with The Ring, Tyson was asked for his thoughts on the current state of U.S. boxing, and he replied, “I don’t see it doing well. The only way I can see it making a remarkable comeback is if we build a great amateur program.”
Tyson was further asked about what American boxing is currently lacking, and the former undisputed heavyweight champion said, “We’re lacking boxing clubs. At one time in the 1980s, we had boxing clubs across the country. The fact is that they are all dying.”
Tyson was then queried on American amateur heavyweight standout Joseph Awinongya Jr., whose goal is to break Tyson’s record as youngest heavyweight champion in history.
When asked if his record will stand forever, Tyson’s response was, “I’m a believer–and Cus D’amato was a believer–that records are meant to be broken. They are made to be broken. I am always for whoever breaks that record. I will never say I don’t want my record to be broken. I want my record to be broken.”
There have only been a handful of American heavyweight champions since Mike Tyson retired. The boxing-mad nation eagerly awaits its next one.
