May marks the end of four-year streak for Canelo Alvarez

The 35-year-old’s return has shifted away from his usual calendar slot.

Canelo Alvarez has traditionally fought on the weekend of Cinco de Mayo, which marks the opening weekend of May each year.

The date celebrates Mexico’s historic victory over the Second French Empire more than 150 years ago.

Canelo has largely built his schedule around the May tradition throughout his career, although his plans were disrupted in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The pound-for-pound star has since returned to the annual slot, featuring on the Cinco de Mayo card in recent years.

But now, that four-year streak looks set to come to an end as he recovers from surgery on a long-term elbow injury.

The 35-year-old is healing well and has now been cleared to return to training.

Canelo was last seen in the ring when he suffered a defeat to Terence Crawford last September.

While he will not be back in action in time for Cinco de Mayo, Canelo is instead preparing to fight on the weekend of Mexican Independence.

As part of his deal with Turki Alalshikh, the Mexican star is set to feature on a ‘Mexico vs the World’ card in Riyadh.

He is also targeting a world title shot against newly crowned WBC champion Christian Mbilli, which would mark his first defence of the belt.
