Matchroom sign potential future star.
In the British side of boxing, it is not a recent realisation that the biggest current stars are in the process of fading, dimming, and going out.
In more literal terms, the biggest boxing names in Britain are in the latter halves of their careers, and there will need to be others to replace them.
Of course, there are already young up-and-comers for U.K. fans to place their hopes on, not least Moses Itauma, who will be fighting for the vacant IBF heavyweight title in around two weeks from now.
However, there will need to be names throughout the weights to keep British boxing going, and Matchroom Boxing earlier today announced the signing of a fighter who may well contribute to that.
Odel Kamara is a 22-year-old amateur standout who will be competing as a professional in the super-welterweight division. Trained by Tony Sims, the Liverpudlian is expected to be making his debut in the paid ranks this October.
“Kamara is one of the future faces of British boxing”, stated promoter Eddie Hearn. “This kid has got it all: he has got the looks, the personality, the power, and above all, he can really fight.
“I think Kamara will be in the conversation over time as one of the most exciting stars we’ve ever produced in this country. We had a lot of competition to sign him, and I am thrilled he chose Matchroom Boxing.
“This young man is going to bring some major nights to Liverpool, and believe me, he is going to light up the world’s stage before long.”
Certainly some very exciting marketing, and whether or not Odel Kamara can live up to it? Boxing fans should keep their eyes on what happens from here.
